Pocket is shutting down July 8, 2025. This is upsetting in spite of the fact that I’ve been shopping for alternatives since a bit before Omnivore shuttered up. Like, in spite of all things Pocket was the one I came back to for various reasons, and now they don’t want me either.
So here’s me shopping for other options.
Name | Pricing Plan | Platforms | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
|Readwise Reader | Free trial, and then requires a |subscription to Readwise (which is a separate service). | Android, iOS, and local-first web app. | Right now, Honestly, Readwise/Reader is probably the best in market right now but you have to be willing to pay. |
|GoodLinks | Buy once. | iOS and macOS only | |
|Raindrop.io | Freemium. | iOS, macOS, Android, and web | I’ve heard it said that Raindrop is a bookmark manager, not a read-it-later, but I haven’t checked for myself what that means. From a Threads reply, though, I gather that it’s designed for saving and not reading. (No reading mode.) |
|Instapaper | Freemium. | Android, iOS and web | |
|Quiche Reader | Free. | iOS and macOS only. Extensions available for Safari, Firefox, and Chrome. | |
[|Plinky – Easily Save Links ](https://www.plinky.app/) | Free. | iOS and macOS only. |
