Asimov’s Three Kinds of Science Fiction

Every science fiction plot ultimately falls into one of three categories: Gadget, Adventure, or Social Sci-Fi.

Gadget Sci-Fi

Technology (or tech inventions) are the focus and meat. How it was invented, how it works, what it’s good or bad for. If it causes problems, that problem needs to be fixed or to worsen by the end of the plot.

Adventure Sci-Fi

The technology is used as a dramatic prop. It may be a solution or a problem, but the story must focus on those problems and solutions being caused, and how the tech helps or hinders.

Social Sci-Fi

The focus of the story is how the tech or invention affects people’s daily lives.
